Vegetable Breeding Institute

Introduction

The Cornell Vegetable Breeding Institute (VBI) includes Faculty conducting both basic and applied vegetable breeding research at Cornell University and 29 domestic and international member seed companies actively supporting their research. One of the important goals of the VBI is to develop improved germplasm and vegetable varieties for the benefit of the ultimate consumer.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Vegetable Breeding Institute (VBI) is five-fold:

  1. To assure a continuing flow of improved vegetable breeding lines and varieties to meet future needs of the vegetable seed and produce industry, and the general public.
  2. To encourage the transition of basic and applied research findings into usable germplasm and methodologies for use by private sector plant breeders who are developing improved vegetable varieties for the consuming public.
  3. To support the continuation of applied vegetable breeding programs in which both graduate and undergraduate students may train to become capable vegetable breeders for the future.
  4. To provide a forum in which a continuing dialogue is encouraged among and between the vegetable seed industry and Cornell University plant breeders.
  5. To ensure the fulfillment of its mission by providing ongoing financial support for vegetable breeding research in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences at Cornell University.
